Three volunteers at the weekly Bendigo Community Garden in White Hills have expanded their composting system to handle 200 kilograms of food scraps each month from nearby homes.
The push comes as energy prices rose 12 per cent in regional Victoria last quarter and more households seek practical ways to lower bills while reducing landfill. City of Greater Bendigo data shows organic waste still makes up 35 per cent of kerbside bins, driving renewed interest in backyard and community solutions.
At the Bendigo Farmers Market held each Saturday at the Showgrounds, stallholder teams teach shoppers how to preserve excess produce without plastic wrap, using beeswax wraps made by a local collective on View Street. The same market now runs a $5 swap table for seedlings and seeds, cutting the need for new purchases at hardware stores. A second group meets monthly at the library branch on Hargreaves Street to run free repair sessions for small appliances, keeping items out of e-waste streams.
City records list 1,200 residents registered for the Sustainable Bendigo rebate program as of June 2026, with average household savings of $180 on water and power bills after installing rainwater tanks or insulation. Workshop attendance at the Hargreaves Street venue has doubled since the start of the year.
Anyone can join the next composting workshop on 19 July at the White Hills garden or drop off repairable items at the Hargreaves Street sessions. Starting with one changed habit, such as bringing reusable containers to the Showgrounds market, quickly links new participants to the faces already making these routines part of daily life in Bendigo.
